I bought my "new" 1998 Savage (I like orange!)last March for $3,250 US. At that price, I didn't bother trying to negotiate. The dealer sold four or five of them at $3,300: I got mine for $50 less because the salesman thought it was a 1997 model. The dealer also had a used Savage, yellow, with, he said, a four-speed (an older one, then), for $2,850. The decision to go new was a no-brainer. I'm on the east coast of the US, by the way. Given the probability of oil leaks, I agree with Max that you should seriously consider the dealer's service in making your decision.
